Thomas Lynn Grogg, a minor, was convicted in a jury trial of first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of murder. The trial court sentenced Grogg to forty years and two years, respectively, for these offenses. Grogg raises the following issues on appeal: (1) whether the circuit court conducted a de novo hearing of the juvenile court order that transferred jurisdiction to the circuit court; (2) whether a juvenile tried and convicted as an adult has an appeal of right to the Court of Appeals of Virginia; (3) whether Grogg was denied effective assistance of counsel during the pre-trial stages of this case in Florida; and (4) whether Groggs inculpatory confession given to Virginia police officers during his detention in Florida should have been suppressed. For the reasons that follow, we affirm Groggs convictions.
